For the past several years, we have taken the kids to see Disney on Ice at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland. Every year, they end their tour there with a Matinee on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. The kids are off school, I am off work, and my wife has an easy time scheduling it off so it has become our tradition, so to speak.
This year’s show was the exact caliber of show you would expect from Disney. We open with the Keystone Characters; Goofy, Donald, Minnie and, of course, Mickey!
They were hosting a talent competition that featured the likes of Pinocchio, Cinderella’s Stepsisters, and the brought out “The Little Mermaid” character Sebastian with his “Dancing Girls” with their rendition of “Under the Sea”. This broke into the Mermaid’s story, with a few song selections from the movie.
The next talent act was a bunch of thugs singing about how they had a dream. For the last verse, Rapunzel from “Tangled” appeared to sing, which led us down a highly altered version of the movie (This being my oldest’s favorite, she was tickled to see her!)
After the intermission, my youngest was overjoyed at the sight of Merida from “Brave” coming out with her bow, ignoring the boys (and her Mother!), calling for the archery competition, and blowing a target up with some sweet pyrotechnics! (And I spent the rest of the day saying “Murder” and “Mother” in a Scottish accent!)
Our final story brought on Gaston from “Beauty and the Beast”. He had “so many talents” that he didn’t know which to use for Mickey’s contest. This, of course, spun off into his love for the young Belle and her taking off to the castle where she is befriended by the cursed staff of the castle.
I am never ceased to be amazed at the choreography involved in such a production. How these athletes (yes, I’m calling them athletes) can come out, night after night, and hit their marks with the precision of a Disney drawing is baffling to me. I can’t stand on skates, let alone do the Charleston in a Mickey suit! (Yes, he actually did!)
Kudos to you, Disney, for yet another fantastic afternoon of entertainment for the entire family! M-I-C….. See ya REAL soon! lol
